let me say something in romanian, because i want to express my thoughts in an appropriate way. ca fiu al unui militar roman ce a facut ca evreii calatori intr-un tren din perioada razboiului mondial ultim, sa ajunga cu bine la destinatie, opunandu-se cu arma legionarilor, tot asa doresc prin gestul acesta sa fac sa ajunga lumii mesajul pasnic al poporului evreu, intruchipat de dl. rabin, sa asigur pe cei care acum deplang un om drag ca mesajul a ajuns si aici, ca a fost inteles si ca omul rabin si-a castigat prin asta un loc in ceruri. dumnezeu sa-l ierte!

Rabin was 100% on the right track - Israel's security was of the utmost importance to him, but he was realistic too, and accepted that peace is never won without compromise - the mark of a real statesman. I am so shocked, too, that a Jew, of all people, could have done this. I cannot believe that it is possible to justify this act in any way within the teachings of our religion.

It's hard for us to see how these events could possibly fit together and make any kind of sense, however we must believe they do, somehow... Why peace should cost humanity the life of a great leader is beyond my understanding. We can only pray that the world we know is capable of changing. Or is its inability to change the great lesson. Either way, there is no greater love than a man to lay his life down for another. With my heart felt condolences, Donus...

I would like to offer my condolences to the family of the late Prime Minister Rabin and to the entire state of Israel. I am a Israeli/American student studying at the University of South Florida. I had a feeling of numbness and denial when I first heard the news on CNN. Mr. Rabin was a leader, a fighter, an inspiration to all jews and Israelies who had an interest of peace. I am not one of many words, however how I feel can be stated in just a few words: The state of Isreal, the Middle East, the entire world, has lost an inspirational leader who through his actions rather then his words proved he was a man that very few men have grown to become. My condolences go out to you, and may the entire state of Israel be at peace and its residents live a safe, healthy and happy life.

My first thoughts when I heard the annoucment was of shock then as the horrible reality set in I remembered the conversation we had around the Holiday table during the Chagim. My cousin a new Oleh to Efrat focused the conversation on the settlers and thier plight. I feel a shared guilt that somehow the Peace I so supported - and never believed I would see in my lifetime - was betrayed by me and my lack of will to somehow confront those who did not see Peace as a true victory. I hope the sacrifice of a man who rose to greatness through his personal courage and vision for a future I too wish for will serve me and my children as a a beacon for the generations.

Dear friends, Now that I've had a day or so to gather my thoughts, and now that I actually have some time to sit down and write, I can begin to express my reaction to the murder of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in more detail. Often at times like this people wonder if down the road they'll remember where they were and what they were doing when "it happened." I don't know if I'll remember twenty years from now, but today, the day of Rabin's burial, I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when I received the news of Rabin's assassination, right down to the hotel room number. I was spending the weekend as part of a group of college student delegates to the United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism's Biennial Convention, in Washington, D.C. As one might imagine, news of the tragedy spread like wildfire in the relatively close quarters of the hotel, and within hours the seven or eight hundred delegates at the convention were thrown into a state of horrified shock. That evening, Motzei Shabbat, I davened Maariv while fighting back tears, particularly during the sections of the prayer service that express our hope for peace, including the final blessing of the Amidah which praises God, "who blesses his people Israel with peace." Particularly poignant was the Havdalah service. Havdallah is a ritual of mixed feelings: wishes for a good week and celebration of the distinction between the sanctified and the mundane are intertwined with a longing sadness that Shabbat is no longer with us, that we must wait another week before we may greet it again. The spices used in the ceremony are intended to comfort our neshama y'teira, the "extra soul" tradition says we are granted on Shabbat, a soul which is deeply upset at the prospect of leaving at the end of Shabbat. This Shabbat, however, both of my souls needed more comforting than the spices were able to afford. The president of the USCJ, Alan Ades, and its Executive Director and Mara D'Atra (literally "master of the place," or official rabbinic authority) Jerome Epstein, announced that the convention would respond to the assassination with an all-night vigil in the lobby of the hotel, where delegates mourning the death of the Prime Minister could stand in prayer, reciting Psalms as is customary when a Jew has died, going in shifts through the night. In my room I watched live coverage on the news from our very hotel, with interviews of Mr. Ades, Rabbi Epstein, and others, and footage of the vigil. Around two in the morning I took part in the vigil. Aside from a few adjustments, the convention program continued as planned. I came home Sunday night, surprised at the emotional impact the tragedy had had on me. I have never been this upset about other "bad news" from Israel before, not even over the many terrorist incidents in the last few years which claimed the lives of innocent Israelis. Similarly, I was surprised to find myself touched in an unanticipated way by President Clinton's tearful statement, "Shalom haver--goodbye, friend." After reflection, I realize now that I am at once filled with immense pride and profound shame. As I watched Rabin's funeral on television this morning, what I saw was living testimony to his incredible efforts to create peace. The attendees to the funeral included people who had never set foot in Jerusalem before today. The presence of the leaders of Egypt and Jordan, two countries who were instrumental in the Arab attack on Israel in 1973, was a dramatic illustration of how the Middle East has been transformed by the peacemaking efforts of some of Israel's more recent heads of state. Despite my sadness at witnessing the burial of Israel's first victim of an assassination, I was imbued with an immutable sense of pride that I was somehow connected to this great man, that he was "one of us." This pride is further augmented by the overwhelming support and sympathy I have observed pouring in from what some might think the least likely places. It seems that not only Jews admired Israel's leader. Moving speeches were made many of the guests at Rabin's funeral this morning. The front page headline of the New York Daily News read "SHALOM." A New York radio station announced that it mourns the death of Yitzhak Rabin and extended its sympathies to his family, the Israeli people, the Jewish community and all who believed in his cause, with John Lennon's "Imagine" playing in the background. A non-Jewish professor of mine expressed her admiration of Rabin and her appreciation of the tragedy of his murder and the impact it has created. All this makes me extraordinarly proud to be a Jew and a Zionist. Of course, this is relatively easy for me to say, as I imagine it is for many liberal-minded Zionists like myself who agreed with Rabin's policies. I wonder if it is more difficult for an opponent of Rabin's policies to reconcile the various conflicting feelings that may arise. I am reminded now of the words of Yossi Beilin, Israel's Minister of Economics and Finance, who spoke at the convention I attended just days before the assassination. Beilin was flanked by Ambassador Dennis Ross and Ambassador Itamar Rabinovich, and spoke at length about the peace process. Beilin was explaining how he values his opposition, even though it may be "inconvienient." Even though his political opponent may object to his policies with every fiber of his being, "at least he cares about Israel." Opposition may be inconvenient, but it is essential, and I would expect that anyone who cares enough about Israel to vocalize disagreement with Rabin also cares enough to mourn his death at least as sincerely as his supporter. It is also with shame, however, that Rabin's death weighs upon me, for I am as connected to Rabin as I am to Jewish extremists in Brooklyn, Israel, and everywhere else who celebrate this horrible murder. Today's New York Times quotes one Brooklyn Jew as saying "I consider his assassination to be divine justice and divine retrubution." Some extremist rabbis have called in the past for Rabin's assassination, perpetuating the lie that Jewish law in any way shape or form sanctions the murder of any human being. If I have any right to associate myself with Rabin and to be proud of his efforts to create peace, then I certainly have no right to evade association with these reprehensible Jews who are unashamed to spread hatred, and who have brought about the death of a hero. If Yitzhak Rabin is my brother, so is Yigal Amir. This is a paradox I can't live with, yet I cannot reconcile it either. The Times quoted someone who has: "'In a way, I'm kind of glad that if this horrible thing had to be done, it should be done by a Jew,' said Anita Spivak.... 'Because at least it's not going to start a war like it would if an Arab had done it. I take comfort from that, in a very sick sort of way." Though I am thoroughly disgusted with the fact that a Jew murdered Rabin, I can't help identifying in some way with Ms. Spivak. My own rabbi also speaks to this conflict. "Actually, the whole thing with Rabin hit me hard--it's taken Zionism 100 years to produce Jews who shoot other Jews because they want to live in peace with their neighbours and I don't really know where we go from here. To me, what matters is that the guy with the gun may have been acting alone (as he says), but he was the product of a world that equates "true" Judaism with fanaticism and fundamentalism and then can't understand why the people they produce are ready to shoot anybody who disagrees with them." Perhaps this is precisely why this tragedy has evoked in me an unprecedented emotional response. In my lifetime, no event has so challenged my identity as a Jew by making me feel so strongly these extremes of pride and shame. For now, thank God, the pride side is winning.

On Nov. 4, 1995, my family and some friends had gathered for a memorial service for my grandfather who had died a year earlier in J'slem. Together we heard on the radio the news of Rabin's death. We were all in shock, none of us knowing what to say. My father, who was still mourning for his father, lit an extra candle for Rabin, and the prayers we recited were much more emotional and poignant as we were saying them for Rabin, his family, and for Israel as well as for my grand- father and my family who are still in Israel. This has not changed. We still feel the shock and the grief as when we had first heard of the news. Our thoughts of Israel and of our family are touched by the sadness. I hope that the unity and strength that Israel has showed for the past fifty years will continue and will hold us together through the trials we have ahead. I met Yitzchak Rabin once in Kikar Malchei Yisrael at a tank expo in 1989. I was in awe if his presence. There I stood Shaking hands with one of Zion's finest products. Mr. Rabin Z"L was not this super human being, he was just like the rest of us in that he loved B'nai Yisrael. I, although hesitant to to support this peace accord 100%, understood that Mr. Rabin moved forward in this path because he believed in it. Mr. Rabin's love for Clal Yisrael can not be disputed.I will remember Mr.Rabin forever and I will use his memory as my inspiration and desire to make peace in Israel. I am working in the Student Department of the Sochnut in New York City and I will be working harder to promote the good will of Yitzchak Rabin Z"L toUniversity students. I would like to dedicate my poem "Morning Song" in the memory of Yitzchak Rabin- When the sun rises over the horizon and the moon bids the night a farewell, the birds awaken with wonder and amazement of the days new offerings. The birds begin to sing- "Today, oh today, the world is mine and for you, all you lonely people rise from your slumber for this is your heaven, your hell and your sanctuary." Yitzchak Rabin was my bird, he woke me of my slumber and made me realize a chance for peace for that I am grateful. Robert N. Braun (Shimon Naphtali Hertz)

Our rabbi in napa california had a wonderful service..and said that your husband was the closest to a Jewish saint, if there were such a thing as a Jewish saint, because a saint in Jewish would be someone who has changed so much in his lifetime due to his own free will in order create peace and help others. Yitzhak changed so much in his life, but he never bragged about his works. He was a meonch.

Mr. Rabin we will miss you greatly but as you are embrassed by our Lord please do not forget us here. Always pray for us. Mr. Rabin, you have made the heavens a more beautiful place. And although your light on this earth has passed on, your light will always shine on in the hearts and souls of each and every one of us. Thank you for your goodness and thanks to your family for enduring such a great sacrifice as losing you. The loss they feel is, I am sure, too much to bare- all our prayers are with you all. Shalom, Salam, Peace God be with you all! My family and I will continue to pray for peace in the Middle East. Yitzhak, we will never forget you. My heart is weeping and words just aren«t enough. When I saw the murderer on tv I was filled with hate. But you dont accomplish any- tning with hate. Your message was love and understanding and to fulfill your dream I have to fill my heart with love and not hate. My deepest condolences to Leah and the family. Yitzhak Rabin embodied everything I considered as Israel. If there ever was a human being who combined the finest, it was he. I am still in shock that anyone, let alone an Israeli, could do this dastardly deed. Even in death, Yitzhak Rabin is coalescing the population towards peace and prosperity and a normal life for all Israelis. Truly one of this world's great men. I shall miss him terribly. ,\\urray Kastner

Please convey our deepest condolences to the Rabin family. The shock of the cowardly action that has unsettled Jews throughout the world, not just in Israel is more than can be imagined. As occasional visitors to our home, Israel, we have always felt that in spite of the concerns with terrorism, Israel was safe from crime and acts of political terrorism. That innocence is gone. Our hope is that peace can be advanced and something good will come out of this senseless act.

My tears, sympathies, and prayers for the future are with you. You especially, but we all as well, have lost a mightly soldier for peace who could lead not only for his strength, for his wisdom born of experience, but because this strength came from a radiating human soul which spoke directly to our hearts and won them over. The road ahead lies tougher still than faced with him, for the work is left undone, and must be finished with more mortal wisdom and soul than was his. For yourselves and his memory, I hope and pray you are successful.

On behalf of my family I extend our heartfelt condolences to the Rabin family & the people of Israel. My husband was born in Haifa in 1945 in what was known as Palestine. May the hatred and bloodshed end for the sake of all of our children, Jews and Arabs. May Leah find the strenghth to continue without her beloved husband. Sincerely, The Nakhleh Family Montreal, Quebec

It's close to the end of November and I still find it hard to come to terms with the fact that such a sincere and good man was gunned down by a Jew. And a religios one??? Do the others that claim to be religious feel as betrayed as I do. Where will it end - and when? And how much more dirt will they dig up before we even get close to knowing the "Truth".

Rabin's integrity, honesty, and no nonsense style were benchmarks of what public figures should be. Many words have and will be written about Rabin, but he had the ability to get people to trust him because he had credibility, a commodity in this day and age, which is rare. A truly historical figure, he is missed by many. My sincere condolences to his family, to Israel, and the world for such a devastating loss.
