I came to Israel in 1949 from a Displaced Persons camp in Germany. I was 9 years old and put down deep roots in my homeland. I was a fortunate child survivor of the Holocaust. My parents and I were the remnants Kovno Jews.Unforetunately we emigrated in 1953 due to my mother's poor health. When I visited Israel in 1969 I was able to visit all the sites in Jerusalem. Yitzhak Rabin the Commander in chief made that possible. I had the good fortune to meet Mr,Rabin z"l when he was the embassador to Washington and he spoke at the Hadassah National Convention. I was the newly elected president of the Burlington, Vermont, chapter of Hadassah. We talked at the hotel elevator and I took his picture. The last time I saw him live was this past May at the AIPAC conference in Washington, I was in charge Tues. of a Gathering in the memory of the Prime Minister at the University of Vermont where I teach Hebrew and advise the Jewish clubs. I shall never forget Yitzhak Rabin the New Jewish Warrior and the Peace Maker. May his memory be for a blessing to all of Israel and to peace loving people everywhere.

As an opposer of THIS peace process (not the peace itself) I'd say that first of all we can't blame anybody for encouraging this murder. The insulting remarks had also a great effect on the mood that made him do this action. second, don't turn Rabin into a saint that died for the peace process. Rabin in all his career have some fails. For example, shooting on the 'Ezel' ship 'Altalena' which was full of jews and weapons and killing 2 Ezel members and wounding others, escaping from the big convoy in march 1948 when he was the commander, drunk, smoking and totaly desperate about the situation before the Six-day war when he was the Commander in Chief of the IDF. Although, I'm very sorry because he was our political opponent and therefor we had to struggle with him in political ways, not in a way of taking life. I send my condolences to Rabin's family, freinds and the population of Israel and the world.

When I first heard about Prime Minister Rabin's death, I was in San Francisco's Chinatown. My colleague and I had just entered a camera shop and the store owner - an Israeli young man - told us the bad news. I felt numb at first. I couldn't bring myself to believe what I had been told. After all, Israelis have always been proud of living in what they call the only democratic state in the Middle East. I knew there was division in Israel because of the peace agreement, but I never thought the animosity would lead to an assassination. I certainly didn't expect an Israeli to fire the shots. I guess I was naive. When it comes to the Holy Land, emotions have always run high. I do have to agree with Leah Rabin's assertion that the Likkud party and its leadership promoted an environment in which political assassination was a viable option. I don't care whether this young law student was following anyone's explicit orders. Netanyahu's rhetoric most certainly fanned the fires. I take comfort in knowing that Shimon Peres will continue to lead his people to a peaceful resolution of its century-old conflict with the Palestinians. I also take comfort in knowing that Rabin's death has the potential to galvanize support behind this course of action. However, I am very saddened to know that Israel has lost one of its greatest warriors. Let us not forget that he fought for Israel's independence as hard as he has lobbied for peace. We have all seen Rabin in his business suit shaking hands with his former enemy. I remember his best as the Chief of Staff of the Israeli army. It seems incomprehensible to me that one of Israel's most fervent defenders should be gunned down for allegedly betraying the Israeli people. Finally, I would like to extend my condolences to the Rabin family. I caught a glimpse on the evening news of the entire family at the funeral and I found myself crying - along with all those Israelis who visited the memorial at the place of his death. I'm not exactly sure why, but this loss saddens me very deeply. I can only hope that we all learn something from this tragedy.

You all have my deepest sympathies. I am a policy analyst, by profession, and I am accoustomed to responding to international events in an analytic manner. This week, I been unable to do so. I was alone in my living room when I heard the news and my first reaction seems to be the same as that of so many Jews. With all the trouble we face "out there," now we are doing it to ourselves!!! How can this be It goes against everything we are taught about the meaning of being Jewish and the sense of family it brings to all of us. My other emotional reactions occured on Monday. First, as I was driving to work in Washington, along my usual route down Connecticut Avenue, my car all of a sudden, without any thought from me, turned up Van Ness and stopped in front of embassy. It was too early to sign the condolence book, so I just sat for a while. Then, the most personal, and emotional reaction. When your granddaughter spoke at your funeral, all I could see and hear were the words my sister spoke at my grandfather's funeral three years ago. At that moment, my heart became one with yours. You have my deepest sympathies.

I was even more saddened to learn that Yitzhak Rabin was gunned down by one of our own. His loss is felt not only by Israel and the jewish people but by the world-at-large. My heartfelt condolences to Yitzhak's family members and my people Israel. Truly, we have witnessed the life and death of a legend. I believe that upon his arrival in Heaven, (for the Peacemakers are dearly beloved of G-D), he was greeted by all the saints and sages, with pats on the back, hugs, handshakes and highfives. For truly, his was a life well lived. A life of service, devoted to others. No greater love hath any man than he lay down his life for his brother, and this Yitzchak was always willing to do. My daughter is living in Israel now, and no doubt Yitzchak will contribute much to her understanding of what it is to devote one's life to a better world. G-d bless Yitzchak Rabin, and comfort his family and our people in this time of shock.
