I have grown to have great admiration for Yitzhak Rabin. He was the first native Israeli to serve as Prime Minister. He was a revolutionary, a general and finally a peace pioneer. Rabin has achieved more than any other Middle Easter leader. He was a man who truly turned his swords into plowshares. I hope we can review a life as a creation of G-d in the making. He remained all his life that which his country and times asked of him. The soldier turned statesman, just as Arafat. These are two men who have evolved to reshape outrage into compassion and inclusiveness, otherwise known as peace. I feel emmense sorry that Yitzack was bloodied and killed while singing the praises of peace. My heart is sick that his assasin was a young Jewish man who envisioned himself as a hero. Ted Kennedy brought a handful of earth from the graveside of his brothers. This he discharged upon the grave of yet another legend. I hope and pray that this fallen hero will not have died in vain. Arafat and Rabin. Give Peace a Chance. As far as Arafat is concerned, though I disliked him for many years, I do see that he has come around with age. The Palestiniens have had a very different history in our time. They were unwanted by Arab world. And they became refugees with nowhere to go. The poor and the broken find radical ways to shake our world. We can see that throughout history. But who admired the Palestinians? The whole world was against them. Through terrorism they were noticed. The Jews, while always wanting to return home, were all over the world. We have been living the diaspora for 2,000 years. A community in crisis grows close and protective of it's members. We perfected a network of assistance for other Jews who were needing help. Our assets were liquid. So, after the Holocaust, the Jewish people were all the more determined to survive. Israel was born out of the support for Jews around the world. The young nation, has for the most part found admiration and support, at least from the States. The cultivating of a garden in the desert has given the Israelies not only terra firma, but the fruit of the labor was always there. How do our Palistinien sisters and brothers compare to this? Arafat has been very successful in bringing the suffeing of his people to the world. At last, thanks to Rabin, the door opened and the footing was equal. I don't think Arafat had any way of giving such a gift. We can only give what we have. Rabin sat on the land of milk and honey with ownership. What did Arafat and his people have? Arafat may not turn out to be a statesman. I would think this is a very difficult transition. But, especially after this weekend, I think that Arafat, or any of us will never be the same. I'm writing to share my deepest sympathies and condolences with the Rabin family, the people of Israel, the Jewish people, and peace loving people everywhere. I don't know the words to express how sad I've been since the loss of this great man. I had more respect for Mr. Rabin than for any other leader in the world. When I saw him speak on TV, I was always so impressed with his intelligence, honesty, confidence, and clarity of thought. I had great confidence in him, and felt secure knowing that the future of Israel was in his hands. He did incredible things, that were courageous and smart, in developing the current peace strategy. It should be obvious to any reasonable observer that the plan he implemented, with the assistance of other Israeli government officials such as Peres, is a great plan, a successful plan, and a plan that ought to be continued. His death is so terribly pointless and difficult to comprehend. Of course, I mourn the loss of this great man, but I'm finding it impossible to come to terms with the way he died. His death was so untimely, unnecessary, violent, horrific, and completely stupid. There's just no suitable reason or explanation for the death of this great man at the hands of another Jew. There are Jews in Israel and in the diaspora who are full of hatred, and have created the atmosphere which probably influenced the killer of Mr. Rabin. I consider those hateful individuals to be partly responsible for the murder of Mr. Rabin and think those hateful individuals ought to repent accordingly. Your death at the hands of this evil individual has placed world focus on the issue of peace in the middle east, but I think it will, or should, call the attention of Jews around the world to the hatred and negativity that has infiltrated the Jewish people and caused significant fragmentation and alienation to occur within the Jewish people. It seems to me that anti-semitism is at an all time low. Non-Jews are no longer the greatest enemy of the Jewish people. The hateful and negative elements of the Jewish population have become the greatest enemy of the Jewish people. I don't know where this hatred has come from, but I suspect it has its roots in the holocaust and centuries of persecution that preceded it, and has been allowed to grow uncontrolled because our focus has always been on issues of immediate survival. After approximately 40 years of uncontrolled growth, the hateful and negative elements of the Jewish community have accumulated sufficient strength to pose a more serious threat to the survival of Judaism than any currently known external enemy. They have caused Jews worldwide to fragment into tiny societies. These fragments are too small to provide the cultural and societal support that is required for a group of people to remain committed to one another and to grow together. Having already accomplished this fragmentation of Jewish society, the hateful and negative Jews have already had a significant negative impact on the survivability of Judaism. Some people have suggested that g-d works in mysterious ways, and that it must have been g-d's will for this to happen to you. I have a hard time accepting this type of thought. If it is true that g-d wanted this to happen to you for a reason, then I suggest that the reason for your death in this way is to call the attention of Jews to the fact that we are being destroyed from within. A problem cannot be solved until people understand the problem. Your death will probably help many Jews (on both sides - peace loving, and hateful alike) to see the problem. It ought to help us to see where these hateful and negative attitudes are leading us. It thereby gives us a chance to solve the problem by recognizing the effects of hate and negative attitudes, and working to remove those emotions from the day-to-day life of Jewish society. The enemy is within. The nature of your death underscores that point in the most unmistakable manner conceivable. Mr. Rabin, when I reflect on your life and your death, I am most deeply saddened by the fact that you never knew how highly the world thought of you. Your own people called you a traitor, murderer, and a Nazi. Despite your towering achievements, and despite the fact that you are held in the highest regard by peace-loving people worldwide, you died with the memory of hearing your own people call you a traitor, murderer, and a Nazi. You are the very last person on the planet who should ever have been accused of those attributes. If you had to die now, I wish you could have died with the knowledge that you are loved so deeply by millions of people worldwide, and that your policies were widely supported and admired by peace loving Jews, world leaders, and perhaps most significantly, by a growing segment of the Arab world.
